Cosmetic dentistry has evolved over time with the emergence of new technologies and experience from those within the industry. The orthodontic procedure is the first cosmetic procedure which dates back over 1000 years BC. Some documents were found indicating an effort to restore and treat teeth in the Greek, Pharaonic and Etruscan eras.
Dr. Aulus Cornelius Celsus had the first recorded attempt to treat teeth by finger pressure. Following that, the French dentist, Pierre Fauchard, invented modern orthodontics and used a device called “Bandeau”, a horseshoe-shaped piece of iron that helped expand the palate.
The First World War witnessed a huge rise in plastic surgeries. Doctors had to perform plastic surgeries for the soldiers to treat their facial injuries resulting from the war. Many dental procedures were developed and introduced, one of which was by a British doctor, Harold Gillies, who managed to implant new teeth for soldiers using a new method of practice. He and his colleagues developed many techniques of plastic surgery. More than 11,000 operations were performed on over 5,000 men with facial injuries resulting from gunshot wounds during the war.
